The Stingy Young Man

The first post i made was about my blog long url address “blog.henbima.hokkymart.com/blog“, the hard and impossible url to remember.

The long url address actually was not my intention at all. I’d say the url going long “accidentally”

To know how i ended up with the long blog address you may need to read these complete story. It started from reasons why i purchased my hosting plan at the first time.

The reasons i purchased a hosting plan, it was basically for two reasons :

Then i realized that my writing technique as well as my English is not perfect, maybe i need to practice first, maybe i need to make a personal blog first before making any blog for my company.

Little Savings With Subdomain

I had to admit, i was to stingy to buy my own domain for my blog at that time. I thought, why should i spend more money (6-8 dollars/year) just to make a “trial and error blog”? Why don’t just use subdomain? Having a subdomain is kind of cool for me as well as it will save me money from buying another domain name.

As a proud of new-first time-host plan-owner, trying every feature my hosting plan has is fun, the mail manager, installing and have a look and feel to softwares i had heard a lot about, joomla, wordpress, phpWiki, you name it.

One that i like the most is, experimenting with the subdomain function. In the first day, i made a subdomains of hokkymart.com for me, my brother, my sister so they can host their blog or any online project here in hokkymart.com if they really want it (really, i did that and their name.hokkymart.com is still there). I even installed WordPress and Joomla for them.

So the “experiment”, i create my domain name from hokkymart.com to be henbima.hokkymart.com, to make it clear that it is blog of henbima, i add “blog” as a prefix because i don’t fancy using “/blog”. Now thats how i made my blog address as : “blog.henbima.hokkymart.com/blog”

Maybe that’s the short story of how i ended up my blog address with a long url, in short it is actually because i am so stingy and don’t want to spend extra money.

It Is Not Cool To Be Stingy

Later on, the more blog post i made, the more blog i read, i realize that it is not cool at all to have a blog sitting in a subdomain. There is so much disadvantages and limitations to set a blog in subdomain.

Moving a blog to a new domain is not easy process to do,i have tried to read and learn from some websites, still i am not confident to move my entire blog. I’d prefer starting a new blog here, and let my old blog stand there with it’s contents

I have learn now, that spending money in appropriate place is necessary for future saving.

If only i had bought this domain at the first time blogging, i won’t “lost” my articles to my old blog and maybe some juicy links people have sent me.

However, i had no regrets anymore moving my domain here. I should be grateful that i move to this domain right before i am more FAMOUS, lol.

Hey! Congrats on your domain! I didn’t use a plugin for the footer. I coded it on CSS, since my Wordpress layouts are not based on templates. They are purely hand-coded by me. You can find tutorials for coding your own Wordpress themes through the Wordpress codex.

You need to learn some basic XHTML and intermediate CSS before your start making your own template though. This tutorial below teaches you how to make the footer stick to the bottom like mine, but in order to do that you have to code your own Wordpress theme first: http://fortysevenmedia.com/blog/archives/making_your_footer_stay_put_with_css/

Hope that helps!

Thanks for your support Ivy, really appreciate it!
I realize now, Wordpress codex should be my first place of finding WordPress related information. I used to take hardway, googling it around.

I will check your blog often too, got many inspirations there, including your design and plugin you are using.

I have checked website you gave me. I guess i have to start re-learn HTML and CSS today. I am a bachelor of IT, put i didn’t put too much attention on Web Development.

If i knew CSS gonna be big like it is today, i would have study it inside out :(

Will report you back when i have succeed changing my appearance ;p

Hey, congratulations for moving to your own (and shorter) domain for your blog. Actually I kind of believe that search engines do not give a lot of attention to subdomain blogs, and spends less effort in sending their little crawling web spiders digging deep inside a domain. So it’s always best to keep your blog on the main page (ie, the root directory of your domain). There are also bloggers who prefer to host their blogs on subdomains like http://www.yourdomain.com/blog, and they redirect traffic from the root directory.

I’m not sure whether are you planning to keep the old blog on the other domain. If you’re not keeping it, I recommend you to use the redirection code found here :) it’s quite useful!
